Being a sailor can be great, but it also means to be prepared for a crisis. Everything is unpredictable, but this does not mean we cannot get over. Sailing emergencies can be very severe when the engine does not work and you are blocked somewhere in the middle of the ocean, in a harbor or a channel. Sailing becomes dangerous and there can happen many things such people falling overboard, a part of the boat will break and the mainsail is also damaged. Although it seems a situation without a happy ending, sailing past experiences proved that things can be worked out and solutions can be found even in these difficult moments.

One of the first things in sailing emergencies means using as soon as possible the equipment that has to be easy to find, so be organized as you never know what may happen. If your boat is in the middle of a crisis, contact the Coast Guard for informative channels and say your name, the boat name, number of people on board, GPS position and other details that are required and necessary. Another possibility is to contact race control, acknowledge the call from Coast Guard or Race Control and then apply the instructions. Sailing can be tricky and risky, but a great sailor thinks about the unexpected situations and risks.

Sailing boats may also be easily damaged when a storm strikes, but there is always something to do to save the team. During a sailing crisis, there is something else that it helps: all the boats that are in that area, must assist in an accident. They have to watch carefully the affected boats, relay messages, give assistance if it is required and advise race control if they are nearby the sailing boat accident. In addition, all other boats should stay radio silent during an accident. In the case of cruising events, the accident will be under the control of Cruising Coordinator that is recommended to accept the help of race control or starter of race.

Sailing competitions have managed to conquer the public in 2011, too. And one of the most expected sailing events of this year has been the Finn World Championship. The international sailing event took place in Perth, Australia, and it started on Sunday, December, 11. Fans of the event and generally, fans of sailing, are happy to watch the boat competition to see if their favorite runners are going to be the ones winning it this year. However, if the Finn Gold Cup is something new for you, you should find some information about the sailing event and its history.

The Finn World Championship is a world championship, recognized by the Intentional Sailing Federation. The first competition, which took place in 1956, was won by Andre Nelis. In 2010 the Finn World Championship took place in San Francisco, United States, and the winner was an American, Edward Wright. The particularity of this sailing competition consists in the fact that the boat model used was especially designed for the Olympics in 1949, and it debuted in 1952. This boat model is nowadays considered to be the most functional and advanced one, being the best Olympic sailboat. Of course, throughout the years, various changes have been made to the sailing boat.

Well, the major surprise of 2011 Finn World Championship has been linked to one of the most popular sailing competitors, Ben Ainslie, from the United Kingdom. The man who has won the sailing competition five times until now has been forced to abandon the race. Ben Ainsile has won the Finn World Championship for the first time in 2002, in Athens. His following series of wins, in 2003, 2004 and 2005, have been interrupted for two years, but Ben Ainsile has managed to once again win Finn World Championship in 2008, when the sailing event was held in Melbourne. Unfortunately for the star, this year’s Finn World Championship did not add a new win to his career in sailing, as Ainsile was disqualified from the competition, ruining his hopes to win the Finn World Championship for the sixth time. The one to win gold at 2011 Finn World Championship was Giles Scott, the man who in 2010 came on third, back then only winning the bronze medal.

I like sailing since I was a teenager. I like water, adventure and it makes me feel great! While sailing, you never know what may happen, but you have to solve that problem! In a way, sailing makes you very responsible and you need to trust yourself and to be calm even if you are confronted with a difficult situation. Many think that sailing is a funny adventure, but is not only that! Sailing is more: it takes a while until you become a professional and you have to learn new things everytime as you are responsible also for the life of others. Sailing means socializing as you will collaborate with your team, mainly if there is a crisis situation, so your colleagues need to know they can rely on you if something bad happens.

In case you want to become a sailor, you should think better before attending a sailing school. Sailing is not only a well paid job you need for a living, it is also a hobby and involves certain qualities you should have, both physical and psychological. Do not be charmed by how sailing is usually presented as things are not like that in the real life. You should ask yourself a few questions and try to be critical with yourself, so you will know if this job is right for you or not. Sailing is also relaxing, but you must be aware there are also a few things that are not so relaxing!

If you still do not know what to do, but you have a friend who is already a sailor, ask his opinion and maybe you will have a clearer image about how things work and if you are good at that or not. Many that have already decided they want to become sailors, think they will travel a lot, but that is not the only thing you will do, so be a little bit realistic and analyze who you are and which are your abilities. If it is helpful, make a list and write down which are all disadvantages and advantages. This way, it will be all clearer!

Sailing may be funny and exciting, but when a storm comes, things can turn into a dangerous adventure. It is not enough to know sailing techniques, surviving techniques, it is important how the team will split its duties while confronting a storm. It is very important for every member of the sailing team to know very well which are its tasks, so organizing everything from the beginning would be great. Weather is always unpredictable, but accidents are also, so teambuilding is essential before sailing in the deep and strange waters.

For a safe sailing, each member of the team has to be ready to confront the unexpected circumstances that may put in danger his own life. The team has to move very fast to make sure they will survive and they will also save the boat. Sailing means no panic, so the members of a team need to stay calm and focus on what they should do. The group should split into smaller groups ready to face the danger and to get where they have to. Sailing may turn into an adventure which may become very dangerous if the team does not know its main responsibilities or if moves too slowly.

So, when you take sailing lessons, make sure you understood all these techniques which are very important in case something bad happens. If one panics, the others members of the team should take his place and start doing something. It is not easy at all, but is essential. In case you are someone who panics very fast, you should solve this problems in case you want to be a great sailor. It is absolutely normal to be afraid, but you have to control your fear. Sailing is not easy as it may seem at the first glance, is a dangerous thing, so you should be ready for facing difficult circumstances that may threat the life of the entire crew. It is a battle with yourself, trying to get rid of all the fear you experience, but you will get over this and you will learn how to cooperate with the other sailors.

Sailing means adventure, adrenaline, freedom, responsibility, intelligence, courage, but also money. If you really like sailing and you have already graduated a sailing school and you have a certificate, but you want your own sailing boat, then you need money to buy one and then let adventure begin! If you do not have enough money, you can buy a second-hand sailing boat, but the disadvantage is you will never be sure of its life span. No matter if is a new or a second-hand sailing boat, when you want to buy one, you first think about price and if you have the necessary budget.

Your investment is very important as you can use the sailing boat for different and many purposes, so you have to pay a lot of attention before buying it. You might be head over hills in love with sailing, but do not be so enthusiastic and try to think a little critically. It will help you take the best decisions. Besides the price of the sailing boat itself, you also have to think about the maintenance prices, so you will also need money for this. You also have to take care of your boat and the maintenance price may cost you pretty much sometimes. Too see if a sailing boat’s price is right, think about the purpose you want to buy it for. So, after this step, you will know if you need a bigger or a smaller boat, but a bigger boat will cost you more.

The quality of the boat has to be great, otherwise, do not buy it and also look at the boat condition, but do not take into consideration only the appearance. A boat may look great, but may have huge technical problems, so pay attention. To avoid being tricked, ask about the fixing history and about the costs, so you will know if you can afford paying that sum of money. There are registration fees, boat insurance, fuel and other taxes that can let you without money in your pocket if you are superficial when you decide to buy a certain boat. Follow all these rules and you will make the right decision!

Sailing it is a challenging field, but it can be risky if you do not pay attention. While sailing, you have amazing sensations and you also feel very free. You might be very excited about it, but do not hurry and think it over. Waters and weather are unpredictable, so you need to fight for your safety if something happens. Before going sailing, there are important things you should do and check: inform about the weather and about waves condition. If they are too powerful, you might have severe sailing troubles, so preventing it is the wisest things you should do. These rules are not addressed only to beginners, they are always necessary when sailing.

Or you might be inexperienced or you might forget something that will be very important, so do not underestimate these rules mainly when there are many people in the boat and you are responsible for their lives. For an experienced sailor, these safe rules might be a routine, but not for you, so do not forget! Before sailing, you should tell someone you will be sailing and also the area. In case an accident happens, they will know where to look for you. Gear and the special clothing are also important things you and the crew should take with you. Then, check the oil and fuel levels, check if the drain plug it is in its place and also prepare the fenders.

While sailing, it is important to check the engine and smell near the cabin to see if there are fumes, look for the first-aid kit, check if there are any leaks, check the crew equipment and open the seacock for water intake. Do not forget to put aside all the personal items or the equipment and talk with people who are on the boat about emergency circumstances and what they should do. It is crucial to test the electronics as the radar and assign which are the roles of your crew in case of an emergency situation. Everything has to be very well established and organized to make sure you and crew will be able to confront with an unexpected situation.

The ISAF, the main authority in sailing, has a lot of work to do now, that the ISAF Sailing World Cup 2011/2012 edition is approaching with the speed of light. The ISAF Sailing World Cup was held for the first time in the 2008/2009 season, out of the desire to bring together all the sailors in the world who were competing at an Olympic level. This means that since then, the ISAF Sailing World Cup gathered in every season all the boats that featured at the Olympics and Paralympics, as long as they were willing to compete, of course.

Let’s face it though, everyone wants to compete in this event, which has taken huge proportions and it became extremely popular. It comes as no surprise thus that no less than 2000 professional sailors, from 66 countries, gather each season to compete in the ISAF Sailing World Cup. The great thing about the ISAF Sailing World Cup is that it lasts for a whole season, meaning that it does not end in one race. Moreover, there are several classes in the ISAF Sailing World Cup. The Olympic classes include 10 categories, 6 intended for men and 4 for women, and the Paralympics classes have 3 categories, depending on the number of sailors. Then, there are seven regattas that the boats must go through if they want to make it to the end. These regattas are usually the same, only their order may differ. In the 2011/2012 season, the ISAF Sailing World Cup regattas will be Melbourne, Miami, Palma, Hyeres, Medemblik, Weymouth, concluding in Kiel.

At each of these regattas, only 20 boats will be scored, the ones who have the highest overall rankings, which means that the first place will be scored 20 points, the second 19 points, and so on. The winner will obviously be the boat with the highest ranking. If you are eager to see the ISAF Sailing World Cup 2011/2012 edition, you should know that it is about to start, as the first day of the competition will be November 6. So keep in touch with the latest news on the event’s website, and you might get the chance to witness one of the ISAF Sailing World Cup’s regattas, and to get the experience of a lifetime.

Among the responsibilities of ISAF, one of the most important is organizing several yachting competitions. One of these competitions is the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship, which has grown to be one of the most popular sailing events in the world. In 2003, the Athlete Participation Program of ISAF began to assist young sailors from all around the world, providing them with coaching support. As a result, 12 more nations have introduced their sailing teams in the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship, which means that over 140 young sailors got to fulfill their dream and to compete on an international level.

The ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship has become so popular, that the hosting countries have been established until 2014. While every country is eager to host the competition, ISAF is now encouraging non-European countries to bid to host the event in 2015, as most ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships have been held on European waters. In 2001, the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship was held in Croatia. The next scheduled countries are Ireland in 2012, Cyprus in 2013, and Portugal in 2014.
