ISAF stands for The International Sailing Federation, and it represents the governing authority for sailing worldwide. Among the responsibilities of ISAF, one of the most important is organizing several yachting competitions. One of these competitions is the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship, which has grown to be one of the most popular sailing events in the world. ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship was held for the first time in 1971, in Sweden, and it has been organized every year ever since.

One of the most important facts about the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship is that it is the longest running event in sailing. Usually, the event takes place in the summer season, and it lasts for no less than 10 days. In 2003, the Athlete Participation Program of ISAF began to assist young sailors from all around the world, providing them with coaching support. As a result, 12 more nations have introduced their sailing teams in the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship, which means that over 140 young sailors got to fulfill their dream and to compete on an international level.

The ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship has become so popular, that the hosting countries have been established until 2014. While every country is eager to host the competition, ISAF is now encouraging non-European countries to bid to host the event in 2015, as most ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships have been held on European waters. In 2001, the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship was held in Croatia. The next scheduled countries are Ireland in 2012, Cyprus in 2013, and Portugal in 2014.
